Home Self Reliance Electricity Harness the Creek

Harness the Creek

E-mail Print

The project I would love to accomplish, is to harness the creek to produce hydro electricity.  This my second attempt to generate electricity from water.  The other is my homebrew turgo turbine.

It is very fulfilling to be self sufficient, I am lucky to have the location I have, the water oozes from the hills here in western Virginia.

Thanks to Jeff for helping, the weekend after Christmas 2006, we shot the fall of the creek to help understand the possibilities.

Creek Elevation

When we first showed up here to re-homestead, we found the remnants of an old building, next to the creek.  As it turns out, it is the location of an old grist mist from the 1800s.  We found this out after purchasing a locally published book on the areas mills.  Then in 2005, when we had a dieing tree removed, from next to the house, we found the old mill stone.  People tell me the bottom half is probably around here some place too.  If they could turn a mill stone back then, I would hope I could make some electricity in the 21st century.

More to come...
